Joseph Guastafeste, the principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 49 years, announced his retirement from the orchestra on Friday.

The Brooklyn native was appointed to the position of principal bass in 1961 by music director Fritz Reiner. Previously Guastafeste was a member of the New Orleans Symphony, which he joined at age 19, before moving on to the Dallas Symphony as principal bass under Walter Hendl and Paul Kletzki.

An onstage retirement ceremony is planned for later this season.
