The Grant Park Music Festival has named Carlos Kalmar artistic director of Chicago’s lakefront festival, and extended his contract for another five years through 2016.

“Having spent the past ten years as principal conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival, I am thrilled to be able to make even bigger and more long-term artistic plans for the future by also assuming the role of artistic director,” said Kalmar in a statement released Monday by the festival.

“Over the next five years the potential for the Festival to dream big dreams and forge ambitious new collaborations with other artists and organizations is enormous. I am delighted to be able to play an even greater role in this amazing Chicago institution.”

Kalmar marked his tenth anniversary as principal conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival last year. The popular conductor will likely take an even greater creative hand in shaping the festival’s adventurous lakefront programming, which has drawn both large audiences and critical acclaim during his decade-long tenure.

The Grant Park Music Festival opens its 77th season June 15 with a French program offering Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major. grantparkmusicfestival.com; 312-742-7638.
