Brian Dickie will end his 13-year reign as general director of Chicago Opera Theater on Friday rather than September 1 as previously announced. Andreas Mitisek will take the reins as general director on Monday.

A company spokeswoman said that with Dickie taking off much time this summer, and rather than having rehearsals for September’s Magic Flute production split between two general directors, Dickie and COT board president Greg O’Leary agreed that it was more practicable for Mitisek to succeed him three months earlier than planned.

On his blog, Dickie stated that this earlier passing of the baton was “an excellent idea so that [Mitisek] can feel unfettered by my presence, and our wonderful team can make the transition smoothly and happily without this ghostly spirit looking on.”

Dickie still plans on returning for the COT Magic Flute in September.
