In an unexpected development, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians abruptly left the negotiating table with CSO management late this afternoon and voted to go on strike. Saturday’s concert has been canceled.

The musicians had already agreed to play Thursday night’s season opener and Friday night’s Millennium Park concert without a contract.

The strike potentially imperils not only this week’s performances but the upcoming Carnegie Hall concerts in New York and the ensuing tour to Mexico.

There is a press conference scheduled for 9 p.m. tonight at Symphony Center.

Developing.
