Lyric Opera presented Donizettti’s Lucia di Lammermoor last fall and this week the other most popular work in the bel canto canon will open at the Civic Opera House with Bellini’s Norma.

Any production with Sondra Radvanovsky is by definition self-recommending and to have the celebrated Illinois-born soprano in the role of the Druid priestess promises great things. Tenor Russell Thomas makes his Lyric debut as Norma’s faithless lover Pollione with Elizabeth DeShong as her friend and romantic rival Adalgisa. Riccardo Frizza conducts in  a new-to-Chicago production by Kevin Newbury and David Korins.

Norma opens 7:30 p.m. Saturday and runs through February 24. lyricopera.org; 312-827-5600.
