In the 2017-18 season, the Harris Theater will present all three of Claudio Monteverdi’s surviving operas to mark the 450th birthday anniversary of the Italian composer.

As part of an international tour this fall, celebrated Baroque conductor John Eliot Gardiner will bring his Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists to Chicago for  performances of L’Orfeo (October 12), l Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria (October 13), and  L’Incoronazione di Poppea (October 15) at the Harris Theater. The season will open October 24 with a starry vocal quartet (Susanna Phillips, Tamara Mumford, Nicholas Phan, and Nathan Gunn) in Brahms’ Libeslieder Waltzes. The program will also include Barber’s Souvenirs and Leonard Bernstein’s song-cycle Arias and Barcarolles with Mumford as soloist.

The seasonal musical offering of the Brandenburg Concertos takes place on December 20. Music of Brahms (Piano Trio in C minor and Hungarian Dances) and Dvořák (Slavonic Dances and Piano Quintet in A major) open the new year January 17, 2018.

Schubert (Fantasie in F minor and Fantasy in C major) and Korngold (Suite for Piano Left Hand, Two Violins, and Cello) are spotlighted February 28. And the CMS season will close May 7 with a trio of works in C minor by Beethoven (Piano Trio) Brahms (Piano Quartet) and Faure (Piano Quartet No. 1).
