In 2016 Lyric Opera delivered one of its finest bel canto productions of recent seasons with Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, due in no small part to Albina Shagimuratova’s remarkable vocalism in the title role.

On Sunday, the Russian singer returns to Lyric Opera in another high-flying soprano showpiece, Bellini’s I Puritani. Set against the political turmoil of 17th-century England, Shagimuratova portrays the heroine Elvira, in love with the Royalist Arturo yet facing an arranged marriage to the Puritan, Riccardo. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee, another celebrated bel canto artist, returns as Arturo. And Enrique Mazzola, who made a most impressive Chicago debut helming that Lucia will be back to conduct.

Bellini’s I Puritani opens 2 p.m. Sunday and runs through February 28. lyricopera.org; 312- 827-5600.
