The Gryphon Trio is likely the finest piano trio you’ve never heard of. That’s not due to any lack of esteem or international renown—only the fact that the Canadian chamber group has not had much of a local presence.

Fortunately, that absence will be rectified this weekend when the Gryphon Trio performs at the Winter Chamber Music Festival.

Now celebrating  their 25th season, the ensemble (violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys and pianist Jamie Parker) has commissioned and premiered more than 70 new works and released a series of excellent recordings on the Analekta label.

Their concert at Northwestern University will offer a meat-and potatoes program: Haydn’s Trio No. 45, Beethoven’s Trio. No. 5 in E flat, and Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C major. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Pick-Staiger Hall in Evanston. music.northwestern.edu
