Muti to lead concert performances of “Otello” in inaugural season
Riccardo Muti will conduct soloists and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a concert version of Verdi’s Otello, one of a few select highlights of the music director designate’s first season, released on Wednesday.
Soloists in the Otello, to be presented April 7, 9, and 12, 2011, include Aleksandrs Antonenko (Otello), Krassimira Stoyanova (Desdemona), Nicola Alaimo (Iago), Barbara Di Castri (Emilia), Juan Francisco Gatell (Cassio), Antonello Ceron (Roderigo), Paolo Gattaglia (Montano) and Eric Owens (Lodovico). The program will be repeated at Carnegie Hall April 15, 2011.
Muti will open his first season as music director with a month-long residency in September. His first CSO subscription Sept. 23 will be an all-Berlioz program featuring Symphonie fantastique and Berlioz’s theatrical Lélio with celebrated actor Gérard Depardieu as narrator. The program will be repeated on September 24, 25 and 28 and will also be performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall on April 16, 2011.
In addition to his subscription weeks, the Italian maestro’s first month will also offer several free events and programs as part of “México 2010,” a citywide celebration in honor of the centennial of the Mexican Revolution and 200th anniversary of Mexican independence.
As part of the opening festivities, the Women’s Board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will host a Symphony Ball on Saturday, October 2. Muti will lead a concert featuring Rossini’s Overture to William Tell, Liszt’s Les préludes and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. The concert will be followed by dinner and dancing in Millennium Park.
