To the surprise of no one, the Lyric Opera of Chicago announced Wednesday that Kate Aldrich has withdrawn from all five of her fall performances in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen. The American mezzo recently had cancelled her scheduled appearance at the Met in the same role, due to side effects of her pregnancy.

Katharine Goeldner, who was slated to sing Carmen in the Oct. 29 matinee, will now take on the role of the gypsy temptress for all six of the Lyric’s fall performances. The production opens Oct. 13. lyricopera.org; 312-332-2244.
