Sir Andrew Davis is going down under.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s music director will take the reins as chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra starting in January 2013. Davis’s contract with the Australian orchestra is set for four years through 2017.

The British conductor’s contract with Lyric Opera was recently extended through the 2020-21 season. He will conduct four of the eight operas in the 2012-2013 Lyric season: Strauss’s Elektra, Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Massenet’s Werther, and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
