The Lyric Opera of Chicago announced late Thursday that the company has extended Renee Fleming’s contract as creative consultant for two more years through 2017. The celebrated soprano’s original five-year contract, which began in 2010, was to expire this year.

Apart from continuing her curation of Bel Canto, the Jimmy Lopez-Nilo Cruz opera, which will received its world premiere at Lyric in December, the press release was light on specifics of what Fleming’s consultancy role would entail.

Lyric states that Fleming will help develop “Chicago Voices,” a yet-to-be-announced “multi-year, multi-faceted project” to be unveiled in 2016; continue “high-profile collaborations she has nurtured with other Chicago-based arts institutions”; develop her role as an advisor to the Ryan Opera Center; and nurture young artists through Lyric Unlimited’s Vocal Partnership Program.
