The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be away on an extended Asian tour for the rest¬†of January, but the orchestra is in town for this first week of 2016, leading off the new year with a choice serving of Austro-German cornerstone rep. Jonathan Nott will conduct the CSO in Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture and Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, with Johannes Moser as soloist in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major. Concerts are 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (minus the Brahms), 8 p.m. Thursday, 1:30 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday.; 312-294-3000.


Placido Domingo has not performed in a Lyric Opera production since his Siegmund in the company’s last Ring cycle a decade ago. The celebrated Spanish tenor–who turns 75 this month–will make a rare Chicago appearance Saturday night in a concert presented by Lyric Opera. Domingo will be joined by soprano Ana Maria Martinez in a program of popular arias and songs, with Sir Andrew Davis leading the Lyric Opera Orchestra 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Civic Opera House.; 312-827-5600.
