Nicholas Kraemer will open Music of the Baroque’s season this weekend with a genuine rarity, Alexander’s Feast. The success of George Frideric Handel’s epic ode was crucial in the composer’s transition from Italian opera to English choral works. The program will begin with the Harp Concerto in B flat, heard as part of the work at its premiere. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie and 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Harris Theater. baroque.org.

The Emerson String Quartet will mark its 40th anniversary season tonight at the Harris Theater. The opening program of the season for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will feature the Emersons in three composers that have played a large part in their long and esteemed career. The lineup offers Beethoven’s “Serioso” String Quartet, Op. 96, Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4 and Mendelssohn’s Octet, in which they will be joined by the Calidore String Quartet.
