The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has posted a deficit of $1.4 million for the 2016-17 season, marking the seventh straight year of shortfalls.

In the 2017 fiscal year report, released last week by the CSO Association, operating expenses were down slightly at $72.2 million compared to $73 million in 2016. Unfortunately, so was operating revenue at $70.8 million, ($71.9 million in 2016), creating a deficit of $1.4 million.

That amount also represents the first increase in the CSO deficit in six seasons ($1.1 million in 2016) after slightly whittling down the debt in previous years.
