Chicago’s music season will get its official start with the Lyric Opera’s Tosca opener next weekend, but one can ease into the fall lineup this Friday night with the Avalon String Quartet.  The ensemble-in-residence at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb opens its downtown—actually far West Loop— series with a worthy program of Romantic music: Beethoven’s Quartet in B flat major, Op. 18, no. 6, Debussy’s Quartet and Chausson’s Concert for Violin, Piano and String  Quartet with guest violinist Rachel Barton Pine and pianist Matthew Hagle.

Concert time is 7:30 p.m.  at Gottlieb Hall, the Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria (three blocks west of Halsted), Chicago. $25, $10 for students and seniors. 800-838-3006;  www.brownpapertickets.com/event/70182
