Steven Isserlis

Steven Isserlis’s Chicago appearances have been infrequent in recent years but Friday night the University of Chicago Presents series offers a fine opportunity to experience the British cellist’s outstanding artistry. The concert will present a genuinely balanced duo with the estimable Gilmore Award winner Kirill Gerstein as pianist. The wide-ranging program offers both Brahms cello sonatas as well as Bartok‚Äôs Rhapsody No. 1 and music of Liszt and Busoni. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. at Mandel Hall.; 773-702-2787.

Also in Hyde Park, the CUBE Contemporary Ensemble marks its 25th anniversary season on Sunday. The characteristically rigorous program features two commissioned world premieres by John Elmquist and Sarah J. Ritch, as well as works by Patricia Morehead, Elliott Carter, Howard Sandroff and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Concert time is 3 p.m. in Fulton Recital Hall at Goodspeed Hall on the University of Chicago campus, 1010 East 59th Street. Admission is free.
