Osmo Vänskä will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on its first two Asian tour dates this weeked in Taiwan with a pair of violin soloists added to spice up the program, the CSO announced Saturday night. As previously announced, Lorin Maazel will direct the rest of the dates, the two conductors standing in for CSO music director Riccardo Muti, who bowed out of the tour due to an inguinal hernia that requires surgery.

Vänskä, music director of the Minnesota Orchestra—whose musicians have been on an extended lockout due to the inability to agree on a new contract—will conduct the two Taipei performances slated for this Friday and Saturday. CSO Concertmaster Robert Chen will appear as soloist in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto on Friday night with Maxim Vengerov performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto on Saturday.

Maazel will join the CSO for the remaining dates in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Seoul.
