The performances of Benjamin Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace on August 17 at the Ravinia Festival have been canceled due to James Conlon falling ill.

The festival music director has been felled by diverticulitis and will undergo surgery to remove an inflamed part of his colon. Following three to four weeks of rest, Conlon is expected to make a full recovery.

“James has made the Britten centennial a primary focus of his conducting around the world this year, so we hope to reschedule this project that was so special to him in a future season,” said Ravinia president and CEO Welz Kauffman in a statement released by the festival. “In the meantime, we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Ticketholders to either the matinee or evening performances will be refunded automatically. For further information, call 847-266-5100 or log on to ravinia.org.
