Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are on tour for most of January, returning at the end of the month. That makes this a good time to explore other area ensembles and presenters, weather permitting.
The gifted young conductor Andrew Grams is in his first season as music director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Grams and the northwest area orchestra will offer a unique Scottish-themed program this weekend with Hamish MacCunn’s Land of the Mountain and the Flood, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with violin soloist Michael Ludwig.
Concert times are 7:30 p.m. at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. elginsymphony.org; 847-888-4000.

Also the Winter Chamber Music Festival opens Friday night and will offer six events at Northwestern University through January 26. The Miro String Quartet and pianist Shai Wosner will lead off with a meat-and-potatoes program featuring Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat, Beethoven’s String Quartet in B flat, Op. 18, no. 6, and Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor.
