The vocal recital continues to be a locally endangered species, yet credit the University of Chicago Presents series with continuing to hold the flame aloft for lieder and song.

Anne Sofie von Otter will return to Chicago Sunday afternoon for a program of French chansons and German lieder, which will include works of Beethoven, Schubert, Faure, Debussy and Chaminade. Accompanying the celebrated Swedish mezzo-soprano will be Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, a stellar artist in her own right.

The concert takes place 3 p.m. at Mandel Hall. Click here or call 773-702-2787.

Winter has definitely arrived in Chicago this week, making the title of the Winter Chamber Music Festival even more apt than usual.

The annual series at Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music kicks off tomorrow night and will offer six concerts through January 25. The New Orford String Quartet will open the festival 7:30 p.m. Friday with music of Beethoven, Brahms and Gary Kulesha. Other programs will feature violinist Simone Lansma, the Dogma Chamber Orchestra, the Lincoln String Quarter and Dover Quartet.
