The Chicago Bach Project marks its fifth anniversary Friday night with John Nelson leading the Chicago Bach Choir and Orchestra in the St. John Passion at the Harris Theater. Nelson’s annual Lenten concerts have found a loyal audience for his rotation of Bach’s greatest choral masterworks. Once again tenor Nicholas Phan will be the Evangelist with bass Stephen Morscheck as Jesus; soprano Lisette Oropesa, countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, tenor John Tessier and bass-baritone Matthew Brook round out the soloists.

Concert time is 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Harris Theater. sdgmusic.org

So when in John Nelson’s Lenten concerts going to include Bach St. Mark Passion?

He did St. Matthew last year. Mass in B minor next year, St. Matthew again in 2017.

There are several reconstructions of Bach’s St. Mark Passion, but as the original music is lost, it holds primarily historical rather than musical interest. Those interested can find recordings of various versions, but I can’t imagine a major performance effort being feasible.

Of course, a major grant from a donor could change that, Mr. Hoffman… :)
