UC Presents announces eclectic schedule for 2015-16

Philip Glass, Paul Lewis, Jordi Savall, and Bach Collegium Japan are among the artists who will appear on the University of Chicago Presents series in the 2015-16 season.

The season opens October 16 with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble in music of Mozart, Strauss and Schubert at Mandel Hall. Other events in the Classic Concert Series are the Arcanto Quartet on November 13 (Bach, Schumann and Smetana); Musicians from Marlboro with clarinetist Anthony McGill January 22 (Beethoven, Penderecki and Brahms); Philip Glass performing his Etudes February 19; the Artemis Quartet in their Chicago debut (Schubert, Bartok and Beethoven) and guitarists Sergio, Odair and Clarice Assad.

Bach Collegium Japan will open the Howard Mayer Brown International Early Music Series October 29 with conductor Masaaki Suzuki leading works of Bach, Vivaldi and Handel with soprano Joanne Lum at Rockefeller Chapel.

Kristian Bezuidenhout will perform works of Mozart and C.P.E. Bach on the fortepiano November 20, and Anonymous 4 will present their latest farewell tour December 20. Also on the series is Jordi Savall and Frank McGuire in an offbeat program of Irish and Scottish folk music, performed on viol and bodhran, and the Italian baroque trio, Flauto Veneziano April 1.

The Pacifica Quartet, UC ensemble in residence, will open its season October 18 with pianist Paul Lewis joining the quartet for a program of Ligeti, Beethoven and Mozart. The Pacifica will also present a program of Schnittke, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn January 17 and music of Mozart, Shostakovich and Beethoven April 24.

Contempo will salute out-going artistic director Shulamit Ran with a program of her music October 27. There will also be a program of European modernism with vocalist Agata Zubel February 29, a multimedia classical-jazz program April 16, and two programs of young composers May 13 and 20.

Of other genres, the expanded Jazz at the Logan series presents Cecile McLorin Salvant (October 23), the Billy Childs Quintet (November 5), Warren Wolf and Wolfpack (February 12), Dion Parson (April 29) and Miguel Zenon (May 26).

Also on tap are Third Coast Percussion February 5 and the Armenian folk trio Zulal May 6.
