The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded $800,000 to Chicago Opera Theater, among $6 million in grants awarded to 14 arts groups in Chicago.

The Chicago-based foundation elected to give all of this year’s MacArthur Awards for Creative and Effective Institutions to local arts organizations, in grants ranging from $200,000 to $1 million.

In addition to the COT gift (for “staging fresh approaches to opera for new audiences”), other musical organizations receiving awards include the Chicago Sinfonietta ($625,000), the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic ($400,000), and eighth blackbird ($400,000).

Other MacArthur awardees include the Lookingglass Theatre ($1 million), and the Hyde Park Art Center, Timeline Theatre Company and Young Chicago Authors, each of which received $625,000.
