As if Bach’s Mass in B minor has no shortage of musical drama, the Chicago Bach Project’s scheduled performance of the work just received an additional dose.
Conductor John Nelson, founder of the popular Lenten series, is suffering from pneumonia and, on his doctor’s advice, has withdrawn from Friday night’s performance at the Harris Theater.
Delta David Gier, the Chicago Bach Project’s assistant conductor, will take Nelson’s place. Music director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra since 2004, Gier will lead the mighty Bach mass in a performance featuring soprano Kathryn Lewek, mezzo-soprano Margaret Lattimore, tenor John McVeigh, bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch and the Chicago Bach Choir and Orchestra.
Delta David Gier conducts the Chicago Bach Project in the Mass in B minor 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Harris Theater. chicagobachproject.org
