Riccardo Muti opens the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s season this week. The CSO music director will lead off his seventh season at the orchestra’s helm with two orchestral showpieces, Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and Strauss’s Don Juan. Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 will complete the program.

Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 7:30 p.m. September 27.; 312-294-3000.

One rarely gets the chance to experience Chinese opera in Chicago but the Harris Theater will provide that choice opportunity next week. The Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company will present The Revenge of Prince Zi Dan September 28 and 29. This retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by the Peking Opera-affiliated company will likely offer a visually resplendent and distinctive take on the art form.

The Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company performs 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29 at the Harris Theater.; 312-224-7777.
