The main event of Riccardo Muti’s May Chicago Symphony Orchestra residency is a complete Brahms cycle, which begins Thursday night and runs through May 13.

The CSO music director has delivered rewarding performances of the individual symphonies in his Chicago tenure. Unlike most integral Brahms cycles, which mix and match for better program balances, Muti is taking the works in strict chronological order with the First and Second symphonies up 8 p.m. Thursday, 1:30 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. cso.org; 312-294-3000.

Symphony Center Presents’ Piano Series has been a strong one this season and continues Sunday with one of our most probing keyboard artists, Murray Perahia. The American pianist offers a characteristic program concentrating on music of three favored composers: Bach’s French Suite No. 6, Schubert’s Four impromptus, D935 and Beethoven’s massive “Hammerklavier” sonata. Concert time is 3 p.m. Sunday at Orchestra Hall. cso.org; 312-294-3000.
