The Newberry Consort

As noted by Shakespeare, Schopenhauer, and the metal band Nazareth, love hurts.

The Newberry Consort will explore just how much this weekend with “Dangerous Love: Playing with Fire!” the ensemble’s final season program. With a lineup of 17th-century Italian vocal and ensemble music by Monteverdi, Rossi, Frescobaldi and others, the program promises to be in the Consort’s vein of scrupulous yet lightly worn scholarship, wry presentation and polished period-instrument performances. With the program divided into sections like “Crazy Love,” “Jealousy,” and “Love is War” a good, skeptical musical time is likely in store.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday at the Newberry Library, 8 p.m. Saturday at the Logan Center for the Arts, and 3 p.m. Sunday at Galvin Recital Hall in Evanston. newberryconsort.org
