Lyric cancels “Götterdämmerung,” all three Ring cycles

The Lyric Opera of Chicago announced Friday that it is cancelling the two upcoming performances of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung as well as all three cycles of Wagner’s Ring due to the COVID-19 pandemic and mandated hall closings.

“The health, safety and security of our audiences, artists, and employees is our highest priority,” said Anthony Freud, Lyric’s general director, president & CEO, in a released statement. “While this decision is very difficult, there was no other option.”

Freud said he is hoping to present Götterdämmerung and the Ring cycle at a future date.

All ticketholders will be contacted by Lyric Opera.
