As the Chicago Symphony Orchestra prepares to open its season Thursday night, it’s a good time to catch up on CSO appointment news and personnel moves since June, some of which were not publicly announced.

* Jay Friedman, the CSO’s principal trombone since 1965, will retire next year, in September of 2025. Auditions for principal trombone will take place this November.

* Principal trumpet Esteban Batallán has left the CSO to take the same position with the Philadelphia Orchestra effective this month. Officially, as is often the case in these circumstances, he is still on the CSO roster and currently on one-year leave. CSO states that he will play some Chicago concerts this season.

* Oboist Lora Schaefer was appointed assistant principal.

* Contrabassoonist Miles Maner has moved to section bassoonist.

* Double bass Alexander Horton was appointed assistant principal.

* Violist Teng Li, former principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, was appointed CSO principal viola.

Li was Riccardo Muti’s final CSO hire. Music director designate Klaus Mäkelä will be calling the shots on future orchestra hires and personnel moves, along with the musician hiring committees.
