Ravinia will be open for business this summer
The Ravinia Festival announced Tuesday that the Highland Park concert series will open for its traditional season this summer. The festival was closed for the first time in its history in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Grant Park Music Festival has indicated that it planned to be open for business as well, which means the month of June will mark the return of live classical music performances (with audiences) to the Chicago area.
“Ravinia believes that music and the arts are an essential part of the personal, artistic, and economic recovery from this past year,” said Jeffrey Haydon, the festival’s new president and CEO. “Our 36 acres of outdoor space provide the perfect setting for a healthy and inspiring experience for all of our guests. The experience will be a little different than in the past, but our science-based approach to carefully reopening the park puts safeguards in place so that audiences can again enjoy live performances.”
All Ravinia performances this summer will take place in the al fresco pavilion. Audience ticketing will observe social distancing with the number of available seats reduced as a result.
That will apply to the performing musicians onstage as well, the reduced numbers of which will also conform to social distancing strictures. So don’t expect any Mahler or Bruckner symphonies, presumably.
The 2021 Ravinia season will mark the belated first year of Marin Alsop as chief conductor and curator.
